Keep All Student Bathrooms Open
As a security measure, some MCPS schools have decided to largely shut down access to student bathrooms during the day, or at least largely restrict and control when and who is allowed to enter. Though many of these schools cite growing drug use or other unwanted activities as the reasoning behind these closures, it's not fair to most other students that everyone has to be punished for the wrongdoings of a select group of people.
I think closing bathrooms is the wrong way to address any issue. Hundreds upon hundreds of students require using the restroom every single day for a variety of reasons, and it's inexcusable that in the worst cases, only one or two bathrooms might be open in an entire high school. As part of my policy platform I've already identified a few steps we can take to address substance abuse, which you can take a look at nearby. And as your SMOB, I will commit to keeping your bathrooms open while still maintaining safety and cleanliness in our schools.
When this county finally implements policies that take strong and decisive action against substance abuse, the closing of bathrooms and the constant policing of who's going in and who's coming out will no longer be necessary. Already, closing bathrooms is like putting a band-aid on a bullet hole, and it fails to address the root of the issue at all. When I am SMOB, any issue will be approached as a function of its causes, not just the effects.
